Nanaimo is the geographical centre of one of the fastest growing areas in Canada - Vancouver Island! The reasons for this astounding growth are no secret... Nanaimo is an excellent place to live, work and invest.
In recent years, Nanaimo's economy has moved from a base largely dependent on the forestry sector to a diversified base including retail and wholesale trade, construction, manufacturing, knowledge-based and technology companies, and government services. There have been hundreds of new businesses created to take advantage of new markets. More products and services means more variety and a strengthening of Nanaimo's role as a regional service centre for much of Vancouver Island. A revitalized downtown core and the completion of an 800 seat performing arts complex will bring new cultural opportunities to the city's residents. New recreational facilities are being built as well as a regional library to provide important amenities. The harbourside walkway has given everyone access to the beautiful waterfront - to walk, shop or simply have a cappuccino.
Location
Nanaimo is well connected with transportation and communications links to the mainland and international markets. There are two ferry terminals to Vancouver, a regional airport, a seaplane terminal with regular service to downtown Vancouver, and a thriving port facility operated by the Nanaimo Harbour Commission.
The city's climate and quality of life make Nanaimo the choice of a new generation of working professionals from across the country. The city's population grew by an average of 3.1% annually from 1991 to 1996, and the current population is about 70,000 in the city, and 121,000 with the surrounding region. About half of all new residents are from other provinces in Canada and the majority are families with young children. This growth has fueled a strong economy. It has also provided the means for Nanaimo's focus on important local changes. Nanaimo has benefited from new people, new business opportunities and new community amenities – and Nanaimo's future is looking bigger and better yet!
