Campbell River and the North Island

Zone 1 of the Vancouver Island Estate Board is a vast area that extends from Campbell River (pop. 30,810) in the south, to the very northern tip of Vancouver Island at Cape Scott Provincial Park.

Campbell River is located 151 km north of Nanaimo and has long been known as the Salmon Capital of the World (shared with Port Alberni). The community is a major regional center. Based on the 2001 Census, a full 70% of Campbell River's residents are between the ages of 15 and 64.

Villages north of Campbell River include: Sayward- Kelsey Bay (population 400), the former southern terminus for BC Ferries' Inside Passage service; Telegraph Cove, once the northern end of a tree-to-tree telegraph line strung along Vancouver Island; and Zeballos (pop. 250), located at the head of Zeballos Inlet, a former mining town turned logging community.

West of Campbell River is the spectacular mountain scenery of Strathcona Provincial Park to Gold River (pop. 1,357). It's one of British Columbia's "instant pulp mill towns," built in 1965.

Continuing north to the tip of Vancouver Island include communities such as Port Hardy (pop.4,597), the terminus of the Prince Rupert ferry and the Discovery Coast Passage ferry to Bella Coola.

Port McNeill (pop.2,928) is the second largest North Island community (located just south of Port Hardy). It is also the terminal for the Tri-Island ferry route to take a B.C. ferry to Alert Bay on Cormorant Island and Sointula on Malcolm Island. Port McNeill has long enjoyed the reputation as the ‘hub' of logging activities in the North Island.

Nearby Port Alice (pop. 1,130) is located on beautiful Neroutsos Inlet, one of Vancouver Island's gateways to the wild and wonderful west coast.
