PARKSVILLE - The 5th Annual Vancouver Island Real Estate Board Commercial Building Awards are like the Oscars for Commercial Buildings. To continue with the analogy, the Vancouver Island Visitors Centre in Courtenay received the Best Picture Oscar April 12. The landmark gateway building which welcomes visitors to the Comox Valley captured the Judge's Choice Award for best overall entry, as well as the Excellence Award for the Institutional category before a packed house at the gala award ceremony held at The Beach Club Resort in Parksville.

The Judge's Choice Award was the highlight of an evening that celebrated a record 41 nominations for the coveted awards, nominees located in communities across Vancouver Island north of the Malahat. RE/MAX Commercial was the Title Sponsor of the event, with Gold Sponsors Coastal Community Credit Union, Fortis BC and Colliers International. Category sponsors were Canadian Western Bank, the Royal Bank of Canada and the Business Development Bank of Canada.

Excellence Award winners were announced in the following categories:
